Click by L. Smyth #ARC #Providedforreview

One of the best unreliable narrator novels I have read in a while.

Click by L. Smyth was just that bit different to everything else I have read so far this year. I love the crime/thriller/psychological drama genre (whatever it is called) – but it can get repetitive. Or more precisely if you read too many as I do, a lot of the story and twists tend to blend into the next one.

Well, Click by L. Smyth stood out.

I doubt I will be forgetting Eva and Marina anytime soon. The relationship between Eva and pretty much everyone in her life was strained. And she had a very unhealthy obsession with social media. She was an interesting and flawed character.

It wasn’t so much that the story was hugely original (with the exception of the final twist – I didn’t see that coming). But, I think the setting and characters made it relatively unique. It has been ages since I read anything about university years and it is the sort of adult book I would have loved in my own younger (much younger) uni years – maybe there is a wealth of books set during university that just passed me by? Any recommendations?

I liked Click a lot, but I can imagine that Click is going to be a bit of a Marmite book – you will either enjoy it or not. I enjoyed it. I didn’t want to put it down. I read it quickly – well quickly for me.

Click was definitely a slow burn of a story and it did have a few lulls, especially in the latter chapters leading up to the final twisty ending. And I did love the first half of the book probably slightly more than the second half, but really I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.

For me – Click was an intense, sinister read that stood out.

I hope to read more by L. Smyth in the future.

I received a copy of Click by L. Smyth for review from the publisher, via NetGalley. The review is my own opinion.

BOOK BLURB

STRANGER. FRIEND. OR ENEMY?

You never really know who you’re talking to online…

A page-turning psychological thriller that will creep under your skin. The perfect read for fans of FRIEND REQUEST and HE SAID/SHE SAID.

Eva arrives at university ready to escape her past. She wants a new life, a new personality. But old habits creep in and she finds herself alone, online, watching the digital lives of others.

One profile in particular captures Eva’s attention: that of her glamorous classmate, Marina. As Eva’s obsession builds, she becomes drawn into a web of lies, danger and suspicion. Because Marina’s perfectly filtered life isn’t what it seems.

What is Marina hiding? And behind the screen, who is Eva really – her friend, a stranger, or an enemy?

It only takes a click to find out.

Click by L. Smyth will be published on 29th March 2019.

  2. Great Review! I am always looking for new and different thrillers/ mystery because even I tend to read a lot from this genre and sometimes the stories don’t click or I am able to guess the twists quite early in the story which absolutely takes away the joy from the book. But I will keep an eye out for this one since you couldn’t anticipate the final twist!!

  3. Fab review! Not my usual type of read but it certainly sounds good. It is great that you didn’t pick up on the final twist beforehand even though you have read a lot within the genre. It is disappointing if it comes too easily. I will keep this book in mind when I want to read something a bit different to normal 🙂

  4. I have hardly read any thrillers or mysteries but it it my mum favourite genre so I might get her this book and then borrow it off her haha!!
I think it is great when stories can surprise so a twist ending sounds good. And I think unreliable narrator are really fun to read about and definitely are a skill to write!! Great review!! 🙂
