I really enjoyed The killer you know by S. R. Masters.

It was good, it had me hooked right from the start and most importantly (for me) it kept me guessing. I changed my mind about the Who, What, Why, When and Where, regularly as I was reading.

The mystery was a mystery.

And I raced through the book to find out what exactly was going on, or if in fact anything had or was happening. It was confusing – in such a good way. And I really can’t discuss the plot at all for fear of giving away SPOILERS! So many spoilers.

But what I can say is that the story is told in alternating points of view from the five main characters and has dual time-frames. Have I just made that sound confusing? If you think I have, please don’t worry. The book was very well structured, and I enjoyed the sections set in the past probably more than the present unusual reunion of old friends. The book was good. It was nostalgic of the 90s.

And although there was 5 main characters, I thought that all of them read well, I enjoyed (if that is the right word) getting to know them all. It was a character driven story.

I am sure I will be reading more by S. R. Masters in the future. I thought his debut novel – The killer you know – was a great. One I will be recommending and passing on.

It was a coming of age story with a murderous twist.

It was Great. I didn’t want to put it down and I read it over a couple of days – in the glorious sunshine we have recently had. The weather has been wonderful in Scotland this week.

And isn’t the cover below great? It would certainly catch my eye in the bookstore.

S. R. Masters studied Philosophy at Girton College, Cambridge before working in public health and health behaviour for the NHS. He is a regular contributor to UK short fiction anthology series The Fiction Desk, having won their Writer’s Award for his short story Just Kids. His story Desert Walk was included in Penguin Random House USA’s Press Start to Play collection and he continues to have short fiction published in a variety of magazines. He grew up around Birmingham but now lives in Oxford with his wife and son.
