The last widow by Karin Slaughter #Bookreview #gifted #TheLastWidow @SlaughterKarin @HarperCollinsUK

Will and Sara are back!

I was delighted to get approved by the publisher via NetGalley for an eARC of The last Widow by Karin Slaughter. Delighted. I couldn’t click the send to my Kindle button fast enough. And then I did what I so rarely do – I started reading straight away. And I was hooked.

I have been reading Karin Slaughter’s books now for nearly two decades, well something like that. I remember reading Blindsighted when it was first published way back in 2001(?). I remember it opened with quite a shocking scene in a bathroom(??)– I must make some time to re-read it.

So, it is safe to say that Karin Slaughter is one of my all-time favourite authors, certainly high up in my Top 10 Favourite authors. I love her dark, often gory and intelligent crime thrillers – I have yet to read a bad book of hers. And I doubt I ever will.

The last widow is the 9th book in the Will Trent series and I love Will. And Sara. And Faith and even Amanda. The characterisation is great. Karin Slaughter is a master at developing her characters and their story arcs from one book to the next, which in my opinion makes the books best read in order.

As with all her other books, The last widow was well written, fast paced and had a gripping story. I really enjoyed the different POVs and I enjoyed the slow start of the book with the same scene written from both Will and Sara’s individual perspectives. Then the action started and, well I won’t say anymore for fear of SPOILERS. Nobody likes a spoiler!

I wanted to slow down my reading but at the same time, I wanted to read faster to find out what was happening. It was an unexpected book. Or at least I didn’t expect the direction of the story. It was at times an uncomfortable read and dealt with themes of domestic terrorism, that are unfortunately relevant to the world we live in. The plot was great, but I don’t want to say too much – spoilers! But it was another intense outing for Will and Sara. And that ending left me eagerly awaiting the next book.

And isn’t the cover design lovely? I think it fits the story well. And I am very much enjoying moody cloud spotting. I see moody clouds everywhere; well I do live in Scotland. But seriously, moody clouds are my new favourite cover design trend.

I am fairly confident that The last widow will be featuring in my end of year favourite books of 2019 blog post. I was impressed. I wanted more. I highly recommend it and any of Karin Slaughter’s other books in the series.

The last widow by Karin Slaughter is due to be published on 13th June 2019.

And now the wait for the next instalment begins…

Book Blurb:

From the No.1 bestselling author comes a gripping new crime thriller featuring Will Trent and Sara Linton

It begins with an abduction. The routine of a family shopping trip is shattered when Michelle Spivey is snatched as she leaves the mall with her young daughter. The police search for her, her partner pleads for her release, but in the end…they find nothing. It’s as if she disappeared into thin air.
A month later, on a sleepy Sunday afternoon, medical examiner Sara Linton is at lunch with her boyfriend Will Trent, an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. But the serenity of the summer’s day is broken by the wail of sirens.
Sara and Will are trained to help in an emergency. Their jobs – their vocations – mean that they run towards a crisis, not away from it. But on this one terrible day that instinct betrays them both. Within hours the situation has spiralled out of control; Sara is taken prisoner; Will is forced undercover. And the fallout will lead them into the Appalachian mountains, to the terrible truth about what really happened to Michelle, and to a remote compound where a radical group has murder in mind…

      1. I enjoyed her standalone – Pretty girls, she also has a few other standalones, but I haven’t gotten to that yet. And Triptych is the first of the Will Trent series and Blindsighted is the first of the Grant County series. All are great. All her books can be read as a standalone, but the characters really do develop and grow as the series progress. If you do pick one up, I would love to know 😀

  1. This will actually be my very first book by her, I’m not sure if jumping in at this point in the series is the best idea, but I have a copy to review and I certainly don’t have the time to read all the books in the series, I hope I’m not completely lost! Wonderful review!

  2. Fantastic! I’ve been reading Karin Slaughter for nearly 15 years and loved and cried and loved again. I love Will with all my heart but still shocked about Jeffrey nearly a decade on!!
I used to reread the series ones all from Blindsighted (they’re called different names in some countries) when a new one came out but don’t think I can do that AND 20 Books Of Summer though!!

    1. I loved Jeffrey he was a memorbale character, he’s mentioned in this book. I love how the series has evolved over time. I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s been reading her books for a LONG time 😀

      1. Oh my heart- ooh I can guess why! I love these books and happily reread them, the only one I can’t do again is Pretty Girls as it just went too far in the horror for me.

  3. Fab review! I love Karin Slaugher’s writing, so I’m not sure how it happened that I haven’t had the chance to meet Will Trent yet! I definitely need to start reading them soon if I’m ever able to catch up.
