I have been very much enjoying the summer holidays – even thou the weather has been a bit of a roller coaster up here in Scotland. I am definitely an autumn/early winter sort of person, I love the sunshine but I much prefer the cooler temperatures. Give me a jumper over a vest top any day.

Anyway, during most of July I have been away from Twitter and mostly away from my blog other than fulfilling blog tour commitments – I will be returning comments and catching up with blogs soon! I’ve missed reading all your wonderful reviews/posts.

And when I did finally log back onto twitter – I’m NOT sure about the new look yet! I was delighted to see that Dave was receiving loads and loads of appreciation posts. Am I right in thinking @theartsyreader1 started it? Well done! Such a good idea. Because Dave has made so many book bloggers (myself included) feel welcomed and help us (me) to connect with such an amazing community. Sorry I missed the appreciation day! But Dave you are appreciated. Thank you!

So hands up if you knew that the funny, fantastic and rather organised Dave AKA @The_WriteReads has written a book!?!?

And it was a great read.

From the very first page Shiri by D.S. Taylor is an action-packed historical drama following the main character Shiri as she finds her place in history. And it’s rather an epic journey. For not only Shiri, but the wealth of characters involved in the story.

The novel was well written, well paced and apart from initially getting a little confused about who some of the characters were, I flew through the pages.

I will admit that I do love learning about different historical periods and I have read several non-fiction historical tomes of books just for fun. Because that’s fun, right!? But, I don’t have much knowledge other than the basics about the rich and vast Egyptian era. I felt that as well as being entertained from reading Shiri, I learned something. For me, Dave managed to strike the correct balance between fact and fiction. The writing and story were detailed, but not bogged down with details. It was clear he had done his research.

Love, betrayal, history, violence, family dynamics, pharaohs, culture, life and death situations – Shiri by D.S. Taylor was a hard book to put down.

Absolutely recommended.
