BOOK BLURB:

When Pentagon bioterror operative Roberto Diaz was sent to investigate a suspected biochemical attack, he found something far worse: a highly mutative organism capable of extinction-level destruction.
Now, after decades of festering in a forgotten sub-basement, the specimen has found its way out and is on a lethal feeding frenzy. And only Diaz knows how to stop it.
He races across the country to help two unwitting security guards – one an ex-con, the other a single mother. Over one harrowing night, the unlikely trio must figure out how to quarantine this horror again . . . before it’s too late,
WOW.
I wonder how long it is until I am off to the cinema to see the film adaptation of Cold Storage? This book read like it was meant to be a movie – and I mean that as a compliment. Cold storage was one blockbuster of a read.
It had action. Loads and loads of action. It was a thriller with a of a bit of Horror and the impending doom of humanity all thrown into the mix. I couldn’t look away. I was utterly Entertained!
All the characters were entertaining if a little predictable in their roles and I loved that David Koepp threw in the odd snippet here and there from the ever-learning, ever-growing fungus POV – Cordyceps Novus. It was fun, or very scary… I couldn’t quite decide!
Cold Storage was a book that didn’t take itself too seriously. Personally, I quite like a bit of humour in the horror genre. Horror and humour shouldn’t work but it does.
And there were Zombies.
Well, sort of.
And gore, and puke. Ugh, the puke.
And scary dark tunnels the characters eagerly climbed down. Why!?!
I wouldn’t have acted at all like Teacake and Naomi, but then my starring role would have been much, much, much more boring!! Yes – one of the main characters was called Teacake.
The writing was good, it was a little slow in places and maybe there was a bit too much backstory for Naomi and Teacake, but that is probably me being picky. It was very well written.
The setting was quite limited – a storage facility, but then that was what the story needed. Limited time, limited scope and limited characters as Diaz raced to save humanity. Everything made sense and David Koepp did a great job at making sure I was never bored.
I would have loved more science behind the fungus- just because science is amazing! There was a bit of explanation behind the potential extinction event, but I love details and I did think the book was lacking a little something. But again these are very small complaints, Cold Storage did exactly what it set out to do and entertained me.
Anyway…
If none of this review makes sense then I suggest you go and read Cold Storage by David Koepp, it was an easy read, an entertaining read and a movie I want to see if it ever gets to that stage.
It was weird and totally over the top, but I would highly recommend it.
And I am going to leave you with one final thought…
Cold storage was nothing like Snakes on a plane, nothing like it. But, it reminded me of it – Does that make any sort of sense?
And finally, a quote that out of context makes no sense but it had me cringing and laughing…
“The fucking deer just took the fucking elevator.”
― David Koepp, Cold Storage
Have you read it?
I received a copy of Cold Storage by David Koepp from the publisher via NetGalley – Thank you!
I love when you can see a book being a movie! Sounds like the perfect book for this time of year.

This is a fantastic review that really gave me a feel for the book. I like it when books of this genre don’t take themselves too seriously as well, it definitely helps me warm to them! I’ll keep this one in mind for when I’m in the mood for an action packed story to fill a rainy day. You might also enjoy I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes which is about trying to stop a biochemical terrorist attack. It can be disturbing but it’s one of the most gripping books I’ve ever read!
