I know I am late to the party but…

Happy BELATED Halloween!

Did you have fun trick or treating? I certainly had one very excited wee witch who scared our neighbours in her crazy-candy-haze of excitement. Our small village did a great job of making the trick or treaters very welcome and very spoiled – so many sweeties!

My favourite thing about Halloween – is obviously watching my daughters excitement, but a very close second is picking up a scary read. I’m a mood reader.

And Halloween always puts me in the mood for something darker and creepy.

But really who doesn’t like a spooky, dark and creepy book to read or listen too around Halloween?

I think it adds to the atmosphere.

Plus, the horror genre is just so varied. Zombies. Vampires. Witches. Ghosts. And I’ve even seen Mermaids making a sinister appearance. It’s a genre with potential.

Instead of picking my Top 3 books- because that is just TOO hard! I’ve decided to pick my go to horror genre authors – writers who in my opinion never fail to make me double check the locks and flinch when my wooden stairs creak.

So in no particular order –

Karina Halle

Although she is probably much better known for her contemporary romance fiction, I first fell in love with her writing and creative abilities in the Experiment in Terror series.

Experiment in Terror is one of my all time favourite series. And I am so in the mood for a re-read now!

The books are all about a ghost/demon hunting duo as they try to film and capture some very disturbing events in some sinister locations. The books are ALL very creepy, smutty and hard to put down.

Darkhouse the first book in the series was good – it wasn’t perfect, but it was scary, sexy and truly creepy. And Perry is… a character worth meeting. And Dex. Oh. My. God. DEX!

I also totally recommend The Devil’s Metal by Karina Halle – A Rock band, the 70’s and Demons make for an interesting and memorable read.

Karina Halle is definitely a favourite author of mine, even thou I don’t tend to read too many of her latest contemporary steamy romances.

Mira Grant

I bought FEED by Mira Grant when it first came out way back in 2010 and she has been a favourite of mine since then, although I will admit that I haven’t yet completed the FEED series ** hangs head in shame **. I must go an buy the whole series on my beloved kindle for a re-read. Because you always need more books, right!?!

However, Mira Grant doesn’t just write about Zombies. Parasite is, well it is what it says a horror featuring a parasite. It’s a bit of a slow burn start to the trilogy, but I very much enjoyed reading all the books and I would be very happy to see Parasite adapted in to a TV series – come on Netflix!

I haven’t read Into the drowning deep YET – but I will soon!

I have been on a bit of a Stephen king kick lately, and I have no intention of stopping any time soon!

I have recently finished reading Revival and it was brilliant. Brilliant. I gave it the full five stars. I love King’s wordy, character driven and slow burn narratives. Revival had me gripped and that ending was memorable. If a tad strange. Well a lot strange. Totally bonkers. I loved it.

After finishing Revival I jumped straight into the Audible audiobook of The institute and although I have so far only listened to 3 hours (out of 19) I am very much enjoying it. Have you read it?

And next up on my TBR pile after I finish The Institute is my beautiful, BEAUTIFUL, Folio society edition copy of The Shining. I want to read it and then the follow up with Dr Sleep before I go and watch the new film with Ewan McGregor. He’s a great actor, one of my favourites.

I’ve also just started to read The Chalk man by C. J. Tudor and I very much think she might be featuring in my TOP 3 next year! It’s SO good so far and it makes me desperate to find some reading time.
