I was in a bit of reading slump all through December – because, well, December is just SO busy! And although my reading usually does come to a bit of a halt EVERY December I couldn’t find my mojo even after Christmas had passed.
I was stuck.
I was watching TV. Lots of TV. And although that isn’t a problem. I’m now several seasons into Supernatural – the Winchester’s rock, right!?!? Watching TV and not reading just isn’t me.
I was missing that feeling of a book that grabs you so hard you can’t put it down. And that was what I found when I started reading The Guest List towards the end of January.
I read.
And I read.
And then I read some more.
The Guest List was good. Really. Very. Good.
I even set an alarm on my Alexa 10 minutes before the school run because I couldn’t put the book down. I was that engrossed I could have forgotten my child. Not really – I promise! But I could have been the last mum to arrive to the playground!
The Guest list by Lucy Foley dragged me out of a reading slump – Do I really need to say more?
I am not going anywhere near the plot of The Guest List for fear of spoilers. So have a read of the blurb for yourself, if you haven’t already.
Book Blurb:
Another murder. Another mystery.
The brand new thriller from the No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author of The Hunting Party.

On a remote island, guests gather for the wedding of the year – the marriage of Jules Keegan and Will Slater.
Old friends.
Past grudges.
Happy families.
Hidden jealousies.
Thirteen guests.
One body.
The wedding cake has barely been cut when one of the guests is found dead. And as a storm unleashes its fury on the island, everyone is trapped.
All have a secret. All have a motive.
One guest won’t leave this wedding alive . . .
Sounds great, right?!?!
And it was. I genuinely never guessed any of the twists and turns, of which there are many. The ending was a whirlwind.
I know I am repeating myself – but it was a great read right from the beginning…
The lights go out.
In an instant, everything is in darkness. The band stop their playing. Inside the marquee the wedding guests squeal and clutch at one another. The light from the candles on the tables only adds to the confusion, sends shadows racing up the canvas walls. It’s impossible to see where anyone is or hear what anyone is saying: above the guests’ voices the wind rises in a frenzy.
Outside a storm is raging.
P.1 The Guest List by Lucy Foley
I liked everything about the book.
The writing was superb. The characters all had a unique voice – and I loved the alternating POV chapters between the main characters. The twists and turns were unexpected, but fitted the story so well. The plot read smoothly. And the remote, dark and very beautiful setting was atmospheric.
I can imagine that The Guest List will be featuring in many, many Top books of 2020 blog posts later in the year. It was entertaining from start to finish.
I will be and have been recommending The Guest List to everyone. EVERYONE.
And I can’t believe I haven’t read any of Lucy Foley’s other books! Something I plan on fixing soon. Very soon. I already have The hunting party sitting waiting for me on my kindle. Have you read The Hunting Party? Am I in for another wild, interesting and twisty read?
I received a copy of the fabulous book from the publisher via the Blog Tour organiser – THANK YOU!
About the author:

Lucy Foley studied English Literature at Durham and UCL universities and worked for several years as a fiction editor in the publishing industry, before leaving to write full-time. The Hunting Party, an instant Sunday Times and Irish Times no.1 bestseller, was Lucy’s debut crime novel, inspired by a particularly remote spot in Scotland that fired her imagination. Lucy is also the author of three historical novels, which have been translated into sixteen languages. Her journalism has appeared in ES Magazine, Sunday Times Style, Grazia and more.

I’ll take that as you enjoyed it just a bit Jules… 🤣
The Hunting Party is definitely worth checking out – one of my fave thrillers from last year. x

That’s good to here – I am going to start it as soon as I finish my current reads and probably after The Mirror and the light which I am hoping arrives through my letterbox tomorrow!

The cover of this book is so terrifyingly simple – I love it. And it’s great to hear you found a book to get you out of a reading slump! That’s one of the best accolades any reader can give a book, I think. 😃

It is a great cover! I think it is simple, clean and I love the white. Although I had to keep my copy out of the reach of the dog – he has a tendency to sit on my books.
