I was delighted to receive the email from Anne asking if I wanted to join in with the blog tour for All in her head by Nikki Smith – The cover and the blurb grabbed my attention right from the beginning. And it was just the sort of gripping read that I needed to take my mind off all the craziness going on in the world at the moment.

All in her head turned out to be a drastically different book than the one I was expecting to read. I had NO idea what was going on at the beginning or middle and that is never a bad thing.

All in her head by Nikki Smith surprised me right from the beginning. And kept me guessing.

The blurb is clever. It makes so much sense after reading the book but it initially threw me completely in the wrong direction. Or maybe that was just me!?! Have you read it? Did you guess where the story was going? I had no idea.

The writing was good, but it was the plot twists that stood out. Nikki Smith goes to A LOT of trouble to keep the reader in the dark and the sense of confusion and desperation experienced by Alison is clear throughout. It was all very well done. But, at the same time the book frustrated me because I wanted to know – I flew threw the pages trying to figure out a story that went from making no sense to being heartbreakingly clear.

I stopped reading mid-page to just absorb how sad, desperate and overwhelmed the main character was. It was harrowing.

All in her head is a book that stands out in a very crowded market – it would make for an excellent book group choice. Even now I am itching to discuss things that I can’t for fear of spoilers! If possible I do recommend going into this book as cold as possible – stay off of Goodreads as I have seen some spoilers over there.

The book has a dual timeline and different POVs featuring the two main characters and is well paced. If I did have one small niggle with the story it was that I was frustrated near the beginning as the author does keep you very much in the dark as she builds tension and suspense. I would like to re-read this again at some point now knowing what I know, as I think it would be a completely different experience.

Not an ending I will forget anytime soon!
