#BOOKREVIEW: I Shot the Devil by Ruth McIver #IShotTheDevil @headlinepg #NetGalley #Crime #ReadingCommunity #ProvidedForReview #Gifted

After saying time and time again that I am staying away from NetGalley I was browsing. I know – I have ZERO will power when it comes to books and although I have reduced my clicking of that ‘request’ button I still haven’t stopped. I doubt I will ever have a feedback ratio above 60!

But who could blame me from clicking and crossing my fingers for I shot the Devil. JUST LOOK AT THE COVER – the gorgeous, dark and so appealing cover art. I love it!

And the blurb, see for yourself…

Book Blurb:

They went out to the woods to have fun. And two of them didn’t return. A dark, twisty thriller of small town buried secrets for readers of IN THE WOODS (DUBLIN MURDERS), THE GIRLS and THE SECRET HISTORY.

Twenty years ago, the devil visited the woods around Southport, Long Island, claiming the lives of two boys. A local youth was charged with murder. Case closed.

Now journalist Erin Sloane has been commissioned to dig deeper into the story and is sent notes from someone long forgotten. But can she trust what she unearths? And how can she unravel what happened when she has her own secrets to hide?

Rich with the sense of a community imploding, buried secrets, corruption and racism, I SHOT THE DEVIL is a stunning portrayal of teenage hysteria and sexuality.

Great blurb, right!?!?!?

A dark and twisty thriller set in a small American town setting, centred around teenage violence and satanic rituals. I shot the Devil was steeped in atmosphere, filled with teenage angst and murder. It was a good read.

I liked the writing and characterisation – I thought the messed up, damaged characters made for compulsive reading, but the plot was a bit slow and the first half of the book’s pacing was a tad sluggish. However, I couldn’t look away from the car wreck of a journey that Erin found herself on.

Erin was unreliable and raw, she was a mess of a character. AND I liked her. I liked her a lot. Erin has been through and witnessed a lot of violence in her life, more violence and hurt than anyone should and she still chooses to tackle the world head on. I admired her courage even if I would never have acted like her.

I shot the devil by Ruth McIver was COMPLULSIVE. Gripping. And all the other buzz words I can’t quite think of right now. It was…

Dark. Edgy. Twisty. Twisted.

I believe I shot the devil is going to do very well and I can’t wait to read some other reviews. I will be watching out for whatever Ruth McIver writes next.

It is my idea of a perfect summer thriller – A book to give you chills in the hottest of sunshine.

I received a copy of I shot the devil by Ruth McIver from the publisher, via NetGalley – THANK YOU! The book will be published in the UK in July 2020.

Have you read the ARC? Are you planning on picking up I Shot the Devil up? Great cover art, right? And I love the title!
