First of all – #COVERLOVE! Wow, someone over at Orbit did an AMAZING job with the cover design – gorgeous.
I keep seeing The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart EVERYWHERE and that makes me happy. It’s such a unique, intriguing and interesting fantasy world. It’s everywhere, right!?!?
The Sukai Dynasty has ruled the Phoenix Empire for over a century, their mastery of bone shard magic powering the monstrous constructs that maintain law and order. But now the emperor’s rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire’s many islands.

Lin is the Emperor’s daughter, but a mysterious illness has stolen her childhood memories and her status as heir to the empire. Trapped in a palace of locked doors and old secrets, Lin vows to reclaim her birthright by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.
But the mysteries behind such power are dark and deep, and wielding her family’s magic carries a great cost. When the revolution reaches the gates of the palace itself, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her throne – and save her people.
The Bone Shard Daughter is an unmissable fantasy debut for 2020 – a captivating tale of magic, revolution and mystery, where a young woman’s sense of identity will make or break an empire.
I didn’t read much fantasy for YEARS and now I am attempting to make up for it as the genre is amazing. It’s so diverse in its concepts and worlds and more often than not it is just SO interesting to read. And The Bone Shard Daughter is no exception – in fact it might be a new favourite of mine.
Also I’m always on the lookout for recommendations, especially, fantasy by female authors – Thank you! And if it’s as good as The Bone Shard Daughter I will be your book blogger friend for life.
Confession time – I haven’t quite finished the book yet, which is ALL my fault as I’ve just been distracted by real world things. But I already know that I am going to give it the full 5 stars – it’s just so engrossing. Gripping. Page-turnery. And ALL the other buzzwords I can’t quite think of right now.
The Bone Shard Daughter is SO good I’m struggling to get the words out for my review, you know that feeling?!? I keep going back to my most simple yet highest praise – I RECOMMEND YOU READ IT.
I love the alternating POV chapters, the pacing is great and the writing and descriptions are so strong that it’s hard to believe it is Andrea Stewart’s debut book. She’s an amazing writer and the world building is so good it appears effortless. But I bet a WHOLE truckload of effort went into creating a magic system and world that holds under the weight of a fairly EPIC story.
Instead of writing more about the book here, what I really want to do is go and finish the last few chapters and then have instant regret because the wait for book 2 will feel like AGES… I will be pre-ordering.
I am in no doubt that on finishing The Bone Shard Daughter I will be left with a colossal book Hangover. COLOSSAL. BOOK. HANGOVER.
Have you read it? Is it on your TBR pile? If not I strongly suggest it should be!
I received a copy of the book from the publisher, which was all arranged by the blog tour organiser – Thank you!

This book was added to my list as soon i noticed it months ago… and yes the COVER is gorgeous… hopefully i will be able to read it soon ^^

What a brilliant review, Jules! I can tell it really made an impact. I, like you, don’t read much Fantasy but one of my goals this year is to branch out to other genres and I’ll be adding this book to my TBR list after reading your positive review. I hope you read many more great fantasy books!
